Helen Chatfield
Child and Adolescent Therapeutic Practitioner
Helen is an experienced therapist who has worked in Child and Adolescent Mental Health services for 23 years. She qualified as a Clinical Social Worker in 2000 and progressed her career by undertaking a number of additional therapeutic trainings, specialising in working with children and adolescents and their families.
Helen has a particular interest and passion in working interpersonally with young people and their families. She undertook a post graduate diploma in Systemic Psychotherapy and advanced training in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) also. She currently teaches at the Anna Freud Centre and UCL on their post graduate diploma in IPT too, supporting developing therapists and also offers supervision.
In addition, Helen was trained (under Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust) to deliver Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR (trauma therapy) and Non Violent Resistance therapy (NVR).
Helen has also completed the National Autism Programme training and has a special interest in adapting therapy to meet the needs of neurodivergent young people and their families. This is close to Helen’s heart having two neurodivergent children herself. She has supported families who have sought assessment, through to diagnosis, and has also helped them navigate the education system and beyond.
Helen adopts a holistic approach to her therapy based on the needs of the people she is working with. She aims to support everyone she sees to work towards their goals and to support them to improve their wellbeing and overall functioning. She provides a comprehensive assessment period in which to consider all aspects of a person’s life and experiences to enable a collaborative formulation to inform intervention.
Helen has a wealth of experience working with depression, anxiety, trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, bereavement, conflictual relationships, neurodivergence and children looked after or adopted.
Helen is registered with Social Work England and is a member of IPTUK and the EMDR Association UK. She holds an advanced DBS certificate.
